Morgan Allen shines as young Ospreys bulldoze Blues

29 Jan

The Ospreys strode to a commanding 29-7 win against the Cardiff Blues as both sides fielded youthful teams in the LV Cup.

An Ospreys pack featuring Welsh internationals Duncan Jones, Mefin Davies and Ian Evans overwhelmed the Blues’ vulnerable young forwards, but it was a lesser known back-rower who caught the eye for the visitors.

Number eight Morgan Allen barged over for a try as a first-half blood replacement for Tom Smith, and the 20-year-old continued to pierce the Blues’ defence when he re-appeared in the second half.

This was Allen’s senior debut for the Ospreys and the Wales Under-20 international marked himself out as one to watch with a number of yard-guzzling carries.

The Ospreys’ much-vaunted fly-half Matthew Morgan showed glimpses of class, though it was a dominant pack performance that laid the foundation for the visitors’ win.

For the Blues, one of the most encouraging aspects of the defeat was a promising performance from 17-year-old winger Harry Robinson.

A tenacious runner, Robinson was a willing carrier of the ball and he showed good pace when afforded space out wide.

Blues coach Dai Young was pleased with his youthful side’s effort, and their forwards’ endeavour in the face of fierce opposition was admirable.

For all their huffing and puffing, however, the Blues were toothless in attack. After Gavin Evans crossed for the home side’s only try within three minutes (below), the Blues rarely threatened.

Loose passing and predictable running angles made the Ospreys’ task of defending their lead a relatively easy one, and the visitors’ win was rarely in doubt, even when they were reduced to 13 men.

With just six forwards on the field after Ian Evans and Cai Griffiths had been sin-binned, the Ospreys underlined their dominance by winning the ball from a Blues scrum.

It was at times a case of men against boys at the Cardiff City Stadium. Judging by this evidence, as well as other recent performances, the Blues’ rebuilding process could prove to be a painful one.
